So you want to be a writer?
So you want to be a writer. I 100% encourage you to do so.
I booked myself into a beautiful writing retreat in the Southern Highlands for my 50th Birthday. It was owned by Kinchem Hegedus. Kinchem is ie of these kind woman who create bonds that seem almost magical. (Kinchem has the most beautiful book out now, based on her wonderful workshops Inner Landscaping.)
Writing had been in the background of my life for a very long time but six years later I am writing full time, having completed a non-fiction book about the breath. Now I am at the very early stages of a new book, following my journey back to yoga therapy, following some hardships in my own life.
I adore my writing life, now connected to a gorgeous group of writers and poets. As long as my journal or computer is near, I can be working on my main project or making note of inspiration, as it appears. My life is mindful, steady, creative and fascinating. I still contribute to the farm bookwork etc. but there is balance in my life, with some online and in person workshops to look forward to, throughout the year.
There are many reasons becoming a writer can feel difficult. One of the main blocks is often a lack of confidence. What I now realise is that the first draft of any idea you have just needs to lay out on the page. It can be professionally edited later. Half of what you write in the first draft may not even make the second draft but it is so important to let the flow start to happen.
If you have a book on your mind, I highly recommend to get yourself a new note book and start! Leave the low self esteem behind and believe in the value of your own voice. Write like no-one is watching if that works for you or imagine you are writing for that one reader, who is waiting for your idea to take shape. Most of all, write for you. Write to find your unique voice and align with other creative people who are ready to encourage you along the way.
There are many wonderful courses at the Australia Writers Centre Writers Centre and the Australian Society of Authors have some brilliant resources ASA
I also enjoy the writing coaches Sarah Sentilles Sarah and Katherine Collette Katherines web
I highly recommend the most beautiful editor and award winning author, Karen Comer Karen is the reason I have completed a book! I could work past any excuses, doubts, fears and distractions thanks to Karen and our very special writing group and friends (the Wild Writers)
Poetry is my new love and I have met the most incredible mentor, Felicity Plunkett. I attended her 4-month online poetry masterclass in 2025. Now I have a group of poets. We meet online weekly and edit each other's poems. It is a highlight in each month. I will attach a link that takes you to 'Red Room Poetry.' A truly inspiring resource where you will find Felicity too. Red Room Poetry Also Varuna is fabulous. Current course offerings at the National Writers House in the Blue Mountains NSW are attached here. Varuna
My other favourite online series is David Whyte's Sunday series - Complete and utter fabulousness David Whyte Sunday Series
Once to devote yourself to writing, a world opens up that is truly exciting. I visit libraries and bookshops wherever I go. Tap into resources from magazines, newspapers and online content that aligns with my subject matter. I try to attend a writers festival each year. One of the best festivals is coming up soon in Bowral the Southern Highlands Writers Festival. SHWF and you really cant go past the amazing Sydney Writers festival SWF
One of the greatest benefits of my commitment to writing are the connections, even when based on the farm. The conversations I have, encouraging other writers from all parts of the world, is probably my greatest joy.
Please do let me know how you are going. I would love to hear when you get started. The best way to contact me is via Instagram @narelle.hunter
My final recommendation is the most incredible home I have ever visited, for writing inspiration. It is Beatrix Potters farmhouse in the Lake District. Beatrix Potters Farmhouse This home is now managed by the National Trust. When the wood fires are burning it really feels like Beatrix has simply ducked out for the milk. Many of the garden beds, are just as pictured in her Peter Rabbit books. All the loveliness you can imagine.
All the very best!
